The Start Of Another Journey

My name is Kaleb Nation, and I am a 21 year old writer from southern California. Many of you might know me from TwilightGuy.com, and my journey as a guy reading the Saga.

As I said when I first started that website, two very long years ago: “I do not read vampire romances, nor werewolf romances, nor hobbit romances, nor any other romances“. However, I lived through reading the entire Twilight Saga. And as such things go, it only follows that I must now experiment on the second item on my list of things I do not read: werewolves. Heaven help us if someone digs up a hobbit romance for me :D

I discovered Shiver when it was given to me at a convention, but never opened it. I was told by Lauren of TheCrookedShelf.com to read it, though I never did, until many months later when I finally opened the book to see what the beginning was like. I knew full well that I didn’t have time to read anything nor get involved in another fandom: and yet I was sucked in before the second chapter ended. Thus, I relented, and decided I would read the rest, and blog my experience.

This website will be my video thoughts on reading Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater, and possibly continuing on to the sequels. Unlike TwilightGuy.com, the reviews here will be done via videos posted once / twice a week with my thoughts on a few chapters at a time (as Maggie’s chapters run shorter and thus I can read a lot at one time).

Posting reviews once a week does NOT reflect upon the book being put-down-able, but rather upon the fact that I am single-handedly writing my own books, managing three other websites, two Youtube accounts, other reading and whatever life I can manage to squeeze in there. I’m spacing things out so it’s all easier to manage (and so that I have time for at least two meals a day).

Unlike other fan sites, I will NOT be posting news about Shiver, the movie, or anything other than my video reviews and specific pages linked from the video reviews. The only thing you’ll find here is a posting of my Shiver videos straight from Youtube. If you are looking for news, visit TheCrookedShelf.com.

    I first heard of Shiver through you and went to the library right away to check it out. I got about half way through on the first day and I love it! I do see a lot of similarities to Twilight though. First of all, I found it ironic the wolf's name is Sam because there is a wolf in Twilight named Sam. Maybe I'm the only one that makes connections like that, but still, I noticed that. Also, in both books the wolves have this mind imagery way of communicating. And there's also the common theme of forbidden or impossible love with mythilogical creatures. Despite the major similarities, I love this book and I am looking forward to Linger!

    Kaleb, I'm so glad your reading Shiver! I love this book! I worked at Borders for a bit and picked it up because it sounded similar to Twilight.

    I jut saw the cover front for the "Shiver" sequel which is called, "Linger". It's about the "after" of the life of Grace and Sam. I can't WAIT for it to come out.

  • Shiver was a GREAT read!! A little Twilighty, but different too. I am looking forward to your comments on this book-lots of material for you to use. I LOVED the ending, caught me off guard a bit.

    i do declare!! i have found a hobbit romance novel! lucky you, kaleb. it's called,
    "The Hobbit, Or There, And Back Again ." weird title, i know, but i am pretty sure that it is a romance and i dare you to look into it! (after you read shiver of course!)

    okay, i just watched the second video on chapters 1-4 and i remember that one time, i think i was 5 or 6, i had a dream, that there was a guy outside my bedroom window. i opened the window wanting to talk to him, but he ended up grabbing me out of the window and trying to kidnap me. i couldn't scream for help, but eventually got out. it was creepy and i woke up practically paralyzed in my bed.
  • Yea, I started "Shiver" from your recommendation and after reading a few pages on amazon. I was hoping to follow along at a responsible pace, but I got hooked and stayed up reading it. I'll finish it tonight. :o)

    i finished reading shiver last night, which only took me a day and a half. by the second to last page, my lip was starting to quiver, but with the last two lines, i started BAWLING!!!! nobody new what was wrong with me. my point is that i absolutley loved the book and would totally read it again. i can't though because i borrowed it from a friends, so yeah. i also want to say, thank you kaleb for doing this, plus twilightguy.com and the other website, which i don't know the name of yet. anyways, thanks. bye

    I actually just began reading Shiver yesterday, and when I learned that you were doing a review website on it I was quite excited. I followed TwilightGuy since you began, and I'm sure this book will be just as fun! ^_^

    Hey Kaleb, I wish you good luck on your new blog. I have almost finished reading Shivver, I tried to read it as you blogged, but it didn't work out. I loved the book so much I carried on reading so now I am on chapter 29 :S
  • I talk fast like you do, Kaleb!! It's easier for me to hear than it is for other people ;) I didn't even notice until you said it, actually!! WHOAHH. Imagine the two of us talking to each other? People would come up and slap us. Well, they'd slap me. I mean, you're Kaleb Nation, so nobody would slap you.
  • Kaleb- I decided to read this book along with you, and I really wanna know what your opinion is. I'm about 100 pages in, and unimpressed. I think it's entertaining, but like a cheesy version of twilight. I'm hoping it will improve.

    honestly, i went out the night i read that you were starting this book and i bought it. and i absolutely hate it. it is so choppy and i swwear just skipps around. it doesnt flow like twilight did. i think the plot is good. but it needs to be written better. in all honesty, i think this is worse writting than the house of night series.

    Ahh, it feels so good to be typing again on a site like this Kaleb. This is going to be an amazing journey, just like the Twilightguy ones. I bought 'Shiver' on my Kindle and I am in love. So I am happy to say this will be a fun vlog to come and see!

    Wow, I have to say I'm so excited about this! I am going to miss the normal blogs (I don't usually have access to a computer with sound), but I will hoard this website for when I do have sound, and then have a watching spree!

    Kaleb! This is ur old pal Candace Charee! lol I am soooooooooooooooooooooooo happy you are helping bring light to "Shiver" It really is the most beautiful book I have ever read! I just finished it yesterday! I am already writing music for it! I havent been this inspired since twilight and have read several books since twilight. One funny thing i noticed is that my music inspired by twilight fits "Shiver" so perfectly..in my humble opinion lol! I can't wait to finish my shiver music and send it to you for your thoughts!

Even though I read Shiver already, when it first came out, I'll be looking forward to reading your chapter reviews. It's an awesome book. I don't think it's really related to Twilight, but thats my opinion. I do plan on rereading Shiver again, right before the sequel comes out. But anyway, congrats on the new project!     Dude, where'd you get the green screen? It almost looks like something from Reflecmedia.
  • I got it at Target! It's 9 of those green pieces of paper taped together and then stuck on the wall. Seriously, I'm cheap :D

    If you get a chance, you should look into possibly acquiring the Reflecmedia chorma key light ring system. The light ring is something that affixes to your camera lens and projects either green or blue light onto a Chromatt screen. It provides a better chroma key than simply a green screen and regular lights, and I think it's less expensive. You should look into it. You can find out more information at the link below.

    I really think you'll get a kick out of this system. I'm not sure if you can get an adapter for your DSLR, but it might be worth looking into.
