I started reading this book because you were starting these blogs. I had to wait for 4 months because I was on a HUGE waiting list at our public library!

I loved the first few chapters of this book, and I am trying to read it fairly slowly, I could have finished it the first day, but I only have it for a month and my sister needs to read it before it goes back too.

I was quite intrigued by Grace just lying there while being attacked, and found it odd that she connected with one of the wolves.

Question of the Day: I had a nightmare where I was witnessing an attack and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't scream or run for help. I was stuck, frozen in place. I woke up absolutely terrified.

I dont have any issues with screaming. I scare pretty easy (or at least I startle easy) so my lovely, lovely *AKA EVIL* friends think they have to jump out at me and grab me all the time. I scream. In public. yeah, its embarassing.

oh and I loved shiver, Im glad ur reading it..

As for the question of the day!! I have never had any troubles with screaming... it's keeping quiet that's the problem!!=)

Yeah Actully,You See I Grew Up Without My Dad (Im Only 13) But Thats grown up right???

Anyway,Yeah. From The Time I Was Eight Until I Was Like Twelve I'd Have These Like Horrifying Nightmares About My Dad Coming To Get Me.And What Made It Worse Was That My Mom Worked Nights So I'd Be All Alone In My House All Night Thinking That My Father Was Going To Come Take Me away.

The Scariest Dream Was Probably The One I Had About Down The Shore. We Go Down The Shore Fir Like A Week Every SUMMER,So I Had This Dream That I Was In The Shore House Alone, and There Was This Huge Thunderstorm.(My Biggest Fear) and I Was Sitting In The Livingroom. There Was All This Thunder And Lightening And The Power Went Out.
I Was All Curled Up On The Couch Crying And Like he came in and kicked the door open,And Grabbed ahold of me and started dragging me throw the wet sand,So my heart was beating so hard and the tears just kept coming,So I woke up and I cried for about two an half hours.I even made my best friend come over at three am.

I bought Shiver and read it in an evening - I could NOT put it down! I really enjoyed your review btw :)

So my experiences with not being able to scream/call our for help: I have panic attacks, and often, when they hit (and they can hit really suddenly, like a slamming door) I can't speak or make a sound to tell anybody what's happening, like I'm trapped in my body, and then when people do cotton on that something's wrong, I can't make my mouth move properly, or form coherent words. A couple of months ago, I had a particularly bad one and couldn't speak for about three hours afterwards - I had to write down what had happened for my teacher.

I had nightmare whilst in primary school. It was set just outside the school this giany grey squirrel/rabbit thing came to kidnap me with a newspaper. I was so scared I couldn't scream or run, the only thing I could do was make this croaking noise. It was a wierd nightmare.

Aaahh. Good stuff, that is, right there. lol.

Real life scary situation. When I was eleven or twelve I went to the woods with my dad to help him put up a homemade deer stand (I still don't quite know what I was "helping" him with, but okay). The steps of the stand were actually part of an old CB tower that he was going to tie to the tree. The thing is, he had to climb the steps first to be able to get it tied to the tree...
I guess the ground was uneven, or he lost his balance or something, but I just remember that one moment there was Dad wrapping a rope around the tree, twelve or so feet in the air, and then the next I watched in horror struck awe as he started to fall backward, the heavy metal steps following closely after him.
I thought that I was witnessing my dad's death. I couldn't scream, I couldn't move, it was all I could do to breathe.
Dad lay there on the ground for what seemed like forever until he finally said something, saying that he would be okay, that it'd only knocked the breath out of him, but I think it's safe to say that that was the most terrifying moment in my life.

[haha] it was great.

    Hey Kaleb!
Loved your video, which isn't much of a surprise because I am a big fan of all your videos! =) I have a lot of weird dreams where I can't scream or cry, and I get mad at myself in the dream because I can't do either. Your review was great. I kind of got that same feeling as I was reading Shiver. Why would someone not be emotionally scarred by this? I know I would. I'm a writer, well if you can even call it that, I don't have anything near done enough to be published, but I love writing. And I know that if I ever wrote about someone being attacked or hurt by an animal, I would write them as more reserved and a little hesitant to have anything to do with that animal. But that's just me. =) I loved Shiver though, it's a great book and Maggie did an excellent job writting from both a guy's and a girl's perspective, which is something I try to attempt every time I sit down to write something. =) Anyway, I look forward to seeing more of what you think about Shiver! =)
  • *shivers* ugh, yes i have.
i was like 8 maybe so the dream may not make sence, but i still get chills every time i remember.
okay, so it was my birthday, and we were having a party. after everyone sang happy birthday and i blew out the candles, the crowd started throwing me up in the air, and they threw me so high that my head went through the ceiling. and where the attic was supposed to be, was a scene of exactly what was underneath me, except in black and white, and everything and everybody was dead with spider webs and everything.
after the people downstairs got me out of the ceiling, everythin was alive and back to color, so i thought i just imagined the whole thing or something. but i still needed to go outside to get some air. as i was walking outside, i saw one of my cousins barely arriving for the party, and something weird happened. It was like every part of her disintergrated and all that was left were her bones, which looked old and brown. the skeleton smiled at me, and it turned back to my cousin.
just then every one came outside and shouted "dance contest!" so i just completely forgot of what i saw.
the first people up for the contest was me and one of my friends.
just in the middle of the dance, we heard dog barks and we stopped dancing. a crowd of dogs came. they were all rabid and they had no fur,nd their teeth were so sharp.
everyone ran inside leaving me frozen infront of the crowd of dogs. I tried to run inside too, but one of the dogs bit on my hand. I managed to kick the dog right in the gut, and get inside and close the door.
I looked at my hand to see what damage the dog had made. On my palm, somehow, he wrote the words "the end" with his teeth. The words were so perfect, I could read them without ANY trouble.
right then the dogs started scratching and barking, and trying to get the door open, so i ran upstairs where everyone was, the same place they sang happy birthday.
There was the same scene i saw in the attic. everything black and white. Everything and everyone dead.
Something in the corner fliquered, i turned and i saw the t.v. fuzz to life. The t.v. showed a line of words moving across the screen. only two words were shown repeating, "The End. The End. The End." over and over again, and it was the same exact way they were written on my palm.
that's when the dogs got through the door, and i don't know if they killed me or whatever, because i woke up.

sorry this was so long. =)
and sorry about spelling mistakes too, my hands were shaking from the memory.
  • oh my gosh it's so scary ! & you were 8 ! I'm 15 & i'd totally freak out dreaming this :O while reading your post i had shivers & i watched behind my back like 10 times because i was scared there would be a dead body or dogs or that the tv would turn on & say ''The end'' LOL .

Can't wait until next week. I just finished Shiver today. Loved it!!☻
  • WOW, I had repressed it until I thought about it! A few months ago I had a dream with spiders. I hate spiders. They were everywhere in the room and I couldn't get out. I remember waking up from my muffled scream. Kind of weird, it was like soundless and then it wasn't. It sounded a bit like an underwater screem. Anyway, I can still hear the warped sound of terror in my sleep.

A very great first post from a very great writer/blogger. Very funny and witty as always!
As for the question, I believe I have been in a few situations like that. I wasn't /nearly/ as calm as Grace was though. I remember once, while I was at the beach with my family, I decided to swim out with my dad. The water was getting kind of crazy, so we were going back in. A few waves came in from different directions, and I was pulled under. I was so shocked, I really couldn't do anything. I was only about six, so I really couldn't get back up to the surface. Luckily, my dad found me before things got too bad. I also sliced my foot open when I was swimming in a lake and got tangled up in some rope. Almost got crushed by a rather large boat, and I nearly drowned, and was strangled. /Again/. I'm not very good with water. xD
But I'm still here, so it just makes for a few interesting stories. Keep up with the great blogging!

  • Wow. I am loving this. It really is great to see a story (or five counting this one) that you enjoy from another persons POV. Especially considering you are afterall a guy. :) Anyways... I actually tend to have a lot of nightmares. Sadly. I once had this dream where I was in the car with my dad and he was driving insanely fast (maybe a twilight/silver volvo owner overdose). We were driving over a one way bridge(so only one car could cross in a certain direction at a time) and I was terrified hence the fact that this bridge had NO FENCE! I then tell my dad to slow down, getting caught up with my own voice and my dad turns around and tells me to relax. Once my dad turns his head back around to continue his maniac driving... we see a car coming in the opposite direction. I instantly think 'oh jesus, I'm gonna die!' -> I couldn't even get the words out to tell my dad to watch out! My dad instinctivly turns the car and we fall in the water only to THEN remember that there is only one road!! My dad manages to get out but I am stuck inside and the water slowly starts rising inside the car. I can hear my heart pounding in my ears, against my rib cage, and I was pretty sure my dad could hear it too. I hit the glass and tried all the doors for escape as my dad tried the same from the outside. After a few minutes the water is already at my neck and soon after I take my last breath. I remember screaming in my head knowing I wouldn't be able to do something as stupid as screaming when I barely had any oxygen left. It was so vivid and real... I was in plain shock (as stupid as that might sound in such a situation). I woke up minutes after, brething heavily in my bed. My heart was still pounding and I was shaking uncontrollably. I don't remember ever being so scared in my life....
Just wanted to say now that I LOVED SHIVER (not as much as The Twilight Saga... but it was great!) and I really hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
BTW, I love your way of thinking & I'm TOTALLY looking forward to the sequel of Bran Hambric :)

Keep doing what you do best (entertain me) :P

    HAHAHAHA!
    Run Grace!
    "Please have mercy sir,"
    "READ YOUR ROMANCE!"
lol I never tire of your videos Kaleb.
    Another great one.

Yes, I have been scared to silence. I was in a car accident when I was 10 years old. My grandparents and I were hit by a drunk driver. After the impact and the smoke from the airbags begin to disperse I found myself eerily calm. I looked around... my grandmother bleeding, my grandfather seriously hurt, and myself bleeding. All I could do is just try to help them or just look around.
I am quite certain I was in shock and being 10 I had no clue how to handle the situation.
I remember grabbing my sleeping bag (we were coming home from a long trip) and trying to clean up my grandmothers blood.
So when you were talking about Grace and your nightmare, I think I understand now (a little better than before) why Grace didn't scream. It makes sense in our head to cry out or yell... but I suppose in real life it doesn't always happen that way.
That is why I like Maggie's book so much.
Even though Shiver is considered "fantasy fiction"... she writes so realistically you think it could be real.

    Great review of Chapters 1-4!
Glad to see how fast you are reading it!

    xoxo

  • I have had many occasions although the most terrifying was actually in real life on my holiday last year. I went paragliding with my family and whilst we were in mid air the cord snapped and me and my dad and brother were just floating above the island until we were crashed into a mini golf course outside a restaurant (which we had coincidentally been to the year before). We were lucky none of us were seriously hurt although it was very terrifying.

Many, many lulz ;) Yes, I have had horrid nightmares in the past about being strangled and bitten by Nagini (haha) and woken in a cold sweat. I am. Absolutely. Terrified. Of. Snakes. I actually woke myself up from it once because I finally got out a really weak, strangled cry-sound. Most of the time I've just been screaming in my head and then die before I can get anything out, but that one time I managed something haha! Talk about an adrenaline rush - I wasn't calm like Grace :)

I feel the same way with spiders!! Usually when I see a spider, I just freeze.
